Introduced in late 1954 as a new 1955 model, Ford’s sporty two-seater Thunderbird created the personal-car market as a steel-bodied and more luxurious alternative to Chevrolet’s fiberglass-bodied early Corvette. For 1955 production at Ford’s Dearborn factory, where all Thunderbirds were built, the first 1,000 serial numbers were reserved exclusively for the Thunderbird. According to Thunderbird experts, the first “production" Thunderbird is known to have been assigned VIN P5FH100005. Maintaining its factory-specified Code R Torch Red exterior color and Trim Code B Red and White upholstery combination, this early-production 1955 Ford Thunderbird is the 166th Thunderbird ever built and consequently part of the sought-after group of cars with the “First 1000" serial numbers. Benefiting from caring prior ownership with limited use and a quality restoration completed under a prior owner during the early 2000s, this historic early-production Thunderbird Is a highly attractive and correct example throughout. Power is delivered by Ford’s 292 cubic-inch “Y-Block" V-8 engine, factory-rated at 193 horsepower with a 4-barrel carburetor and optional, floor-shifted Ford-O-Matic 2-speed automatic transmission. In addition to its body-color removable auxiliary hardtop, this early Thunderbird includes a White convertible top in good condition, plus features and options including a freshly reupholstered 4-way power-adjustable seat, pushbutton AM radio, power steering, manual 4-wheel drum brakes, and an OEM-type engine dress-up kit including a chrome open-element air cleaner and cast aluminum finned rocker covers. A recent inspection and test drive confirm the sound operating order of the Thunderbird’s rebuilt 292 CI V-8 engine and Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, with the vehicle starting, idling, and running nicely and without issue. Correct factory-type inspection stickers are in place underhood, and the engine and engine bay are presented in tidy and highly correct order. The frame, underbody and suspension are likewise presented in restored, maintained, and highly correct condition. The hardtop headliner is correct, clean and damage-free. While older, the Torch Red paint finish is of high quality and glossy, benefiting from recent polishing. Chrome and brightwork are in good condition overall, with some pitting noted to the front-bumper “bullets." Fitted with a correct mat, the Thunderbird’s trunk houses a spare wheel and correct tire, indoor car cover, fire extinguisher, and roadside emergency kit, plus a boxed spare muffler.
