1954 Willys M38A1

Introduced in 1950 and based on the improved postwar CJ-3A, the M38 (or MC) was the first major update of the heroic GP (General Purpose) “Jeep" of WW II fame. Sporting numerous improvements, the M38A1 arrived in 1952, with production by Willys and Willys Motors/Kaiser Jeep through 1971. Widely procured by all branches of the U.S. military until 1957 and by the Marine Corps to 1971, the M38A1 featured a major restyling with a rounded hood and fenders, a one-inch longer wheelbase, and the first use of Willys’ new 134 cubic-inch, f-head “Hurricane" 4-cylinder engine. The M38A1 served as the basis for the popular CJ-5 “Civilian Jeep" models produced through 1983 and earned lasting fame for its adaptability and ruggedness on the extremely harsh terrain of the Korean Peninsula during the 1950-53 conflict and the Vietnam War that followed. Millions were reacquainted with the M38 and M38A1 during the 1970s-‘80s with prominent use in the star-studded 1970 film M*A*S*H and the long-running, critically acclaimed TV series of the same name. According to its brass ID plaque, this Willys M38A1 Military Jeep was built during August 1954, and it sports a professional and highly accurate restoration competed by Legendary Motorcar circa 2014. Finished in proper Olive Drab paint and U.S. Army graphics, the Jeep is highly equipped with a canvas folding top and top bows, a heavy-duty 24V electrical system, military field radio, and water-fording equipment including an intake snorkel and rear exhaust stack. Power is delivered by a “Hurricane" 134 cubic-inch engine, 3-speed manual transmission, and 4-wheel drivetrain. Other correct features include twin towing hooks up front, a driver’s side view mirror and vacuum/manual windshield wipers, a jerry can and mounted spare wheel/tire to the rear, correct canvas seat covers, web-type front seat belts, and signal flashers and turn-signal indicators.
